Unusual Noise & Vibration

Squeaks, rattles, clunks, hums or shakes. We track down the source and explain what it means.

A new noise or vibration is often the first sign that something is wearing out. Catching it early can keep a small repair from becoming a larger one.

It helps us when you can tell us when it happens: at certain speeds, while turning, braking or accelerating, or when the vehicle is cold.

FAQ

Unusual Noise & Vibration FAQs

Have another question? Call (253) 627-3111.

What causes a vibration at highway speed?

Common causes include out-of-balance wheels, tire damage or irregular wear, and worn suspension or driveline parts. Balancing is often the first thing we check.

Is a clunking noise over bumps dangerous?

It can indicate worn suspension or steering parts such as ball joints, links or mounts. These affect control of the vehicle, so have it inspected promptly.

The noise comes and goes. Should I still bring it in?

Yes. Make a note of when it happens (speed, temperature, turning or braking) so we can try to reproduce it during the road test.
