Check Engine Light Diagnosis
We find out why the light is on, explain the cause in plain language and quote the repair before any work begins.
The check engine light means your vehicle’s computer has detected a problem with the engine, emissions or related systems. The cause can be as simple as a loose gas cap or as serious as an engine misfire.
A trouble code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Our technicians use the code, live data and hands-on testing to pinpoint the actual problem.
When to bring it in
- The check engine light is on steadily
- The light is flashing (have it checked right away)
- Rough idle, hesitation or loss of power
- Lower fuel economy than usual
- A failed emissions test
- Unusual smells or smoke from the exhaust
What’s included
- Reading and interpreting stored trouble codes
- Reviewing live sensor data
- Testing the components related to the code
- Checking for related technical service bulletins
- A written explanation of findings and a repair estimate
What will it cost?
Pricing depends on your vehicle and what we find. We’ll inspect, explain the options and give you an estimate before any work begins. No work is done without your approval.
What happens during your visit
Scan
We connect a professional scan tool to retrieve codes and freeze-frame data.
Test
We test the components and systems the codes point to so we repair the cause, not a guess.
Explain
You get a clear explanation of what is wrong, how urgent it is, and what the repair involves.
Repair & confirm
With your approval, we make the repair, clear the codes and verify the fix.
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
A steady light usually means you should have the vehicle checked soon. A flashing light often indicates a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter, so reduce driving and have it inspected as soon as possible.
Can a loose gas cap turn on the light?
Yes. A loose or faulty gas cap can trigger an evaporative emissions code. If tightening it doesn’t turn the light off after a few drive cycles, have it checked.
Why not just read the code and replace that part?
A code tells us which system reported a problem, not always which part failed. Testing first helps avoid replacing parts that aren’t the cause.
